Beautiful socks. I would have thought doubled yarn would be too thick, did you change needle size?
Someone at The Weaving Works suggested doing a slip stitch pattern on the heals.
On the RS k1, sl1 wyib across and then purl back on the WS. It is tighter than st st and you have that carried yarn on the inside that adds thickness. I think it changes your row gauge too and you end up with more rows.
I tried it. It was okay, I usually add reinforcement.

They are coming along nicely! When ever I reinforce toes and heels I use the same yarn, but I do it after the fact. Never thought of just doubling up. . .will have to try that!
